The preparation of samples of solid substances for spectroscopic analysis

X-ray fluorescence spectrometry is one of the most versatile multi-element methods of chemical analysis. The technique is based on excitation of fluorescent radiation from a sample by bombarding it with high energy X-ray quanta and subsequent study of the characteristic X-ray radiation emitted by its elements.
X-ray fluorescence spectrometry is a comparison technique, ie. the concentrations of the elements contained in an unknown sample are calculated with the aid of regression models based on measurements on standard samples with a known chemical composition. The technology of spectroscopic analysis instruments and here in particular X-ray fluorescence spectrometers has undergone very rapid development in the last few decades. As instrument error is negligible, the accuracy of results depends essentially on the preparation of the standard substances and the sample for analysis. There is a choice of two processes for this: namely the production of fused or compacted pellets. As the latter method has definite advantages, it will be dealt with in more detail here with regard to mechanical sample preparation.
